Global NCAP 2014 Innovation Award Recognises Work To Improve Fleet Safety

Global NCAP’s annual awards have recognised BHP Billiton’s fleet management policy. Adopted in 2012, the company’s Fatal Risk Control policy included a five star requirement for all leased or owned light duty vehicles.

Global NCAP’s Secretary General David Ward said: “BHP Billiton has shown that making a five star safety rating a requirement is possible and that vehicle manufacturers respond positively when their customers ask for better safety as standard. Fleet managers around the world have a significant role to play in ensuring that road safety continues to improve. By making a five star safety rating a requirement for their organisations, fleet managers will improve outcomes for their employees and for other road users.”

Accepting the award, Dr Andrew Lewin, Vice President Safety & Security at BHP Billiton, said: “We adopted the five star safety requirement in 2012 as part of our Fatal Risk Control policy. The policy is ensuring our entire fleet will be as safe as practically possible, addressing the most common types of collision. It demonstrates our commitment to sustainability, which includes putting health and safety first, and simplicity – focusing our efforts on the things that matter most.”

The Award was presented at Global NCAP’s Annual Forum, held in Melbourne. At the Forum Global NCAP adopted the Melbourne Declaration on Fleet Safety. The Declaration recommends that fleet managers adopt the Fleet Safety and Safer Car Purchasing Policy and that fleet managers endeavor to select vehicles that meet UN regulations for pedestrian protection, electronic stability control and where possible autonomous emergency braking.
