Women still at greater injury risk than men in road crashes

Women remain at a higher injury risk than men in road crashes, despite a lessening of the difference in outcomes in recent years.

New research by America’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that women are at greater risk of injury than men in 26 percent of the 150 crash injury models, and they are also at more frequent risk of moderate injury.

A new female crash test dummy, the THOR-5F, is intended to help eliminate the differences in injury outcome between men and women. It was unveiled last November and has been designed using a far greater amount of female-specific data than its predecessor, the Hybrid III.

Jonathan Morrison, the NHTSA’s Administrator, said: “Better understanding of the unique ways in which women are impacted differently in crashes than men is essential to reducing traffic fatalities.”
