Euro NCAP’s Safer Trucks programme receives major honour

Prince Michael

Pioneering work by Euro NCAP to bring independent safety ratings to heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) has won the prestigious 2025 Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

HGVs are one of the most overlooked areas of road safety: trucks make up less than 3% of road vehicles, but are responsible for 15% of deaths (90% of which are not HGV occupants).

Euro NCAP’s SAFER TRUCKS initiative aims to raise safety standards through a testing programme based on collaboration, independence and evidence.

Matthew Avery, Euro NCAP director of strategic development, said: “Trucks are often overlooked in vehicle safety, despite being involved in some of the most severe crashes. While cars have become significantly safer over the last two decades, the safety of heavy vehicles has not received the same level of scrutiny. We're changing that, and this award affirms that we are on the right path.

”

Autoliv, whose decades-long commitment to raising vehicle safety standards was honoured at the recent 2025 Global NCAP Awards, were also recognised at the ceremony. They received the 2025 Premier Award, for a track record of innovation and extensive collaboration with policymakers and academic researchers over many years.
