Saving lives through better safety communication

Four people are killed on Great Britain’s roads every day, and a person is killed or seriously injured every 17 minutes.

Yet these alarming figures could be reduced simply by increasing awareness and understanding of existing vehicle safety features.

November’s UK Road Safety Week focused on the new Vehicle Safety Technology Report published by Brake, a UK road safety charity. It found widespread lack of understanding about the life-saving features available on many new vehicles.

“A lot of work needs to be done in communicating these technologies and to demystify jargon,” said David Ward, President Emeritus of Global NCAP. “That’s a big communication challenge, because many of the technologies are quite complex and need the driver’s full understanding at all times. But this is what we need to do, to communicate better with the public.”
