The urgent need to improve fleet safety
Driving for work is one of the biggest risks for employees: work-related crashes cause 400,000 deaths a year – a third of the global total.
But with sixty per cent of vehicle sales in Europe being for fleets, a huge opportunity exists to lower those figures, via better fleet safety.
Speaking after a session at NCAP25 dedicated to fleet safety, Luca Pascotto, the FIA’s Head of Road Safety and Global Advocacy, said it was “essential” for fleet safety to be high on the agenda of the road safety debate.
“If we want to improve safety globally,” he said, “it’s extremely important to address fleet management.”
He highlighted the role of the private sector in choosing the safest vehicles for fleets, training drivers and setting standards. “Then they can progressively include safety as part of their corporate social responsibility,” he said.
To help support fleet managers in buying safer vehicles, Global NCAP has published a new edition of its FleetSafe guide, which highlights vehicles with NCAP ‘five star’ ratings and identifies the most important UN safety standards for passenger cars.
It also now includes recommendations for commercial vehicle categories and motorcycles.
