Asia-Pacific road safety leaders unite in Manila for FIA Safe Mobility programme

FIA Safe Mobility

Road safety leaders from across the Asia-Pacific gathered in Manila for the FIA’s Safe Mobility 4 All & 4 Life programme, a global initiative aimed at strengthening road safety through collaboration, training and evidence-based action.

Delivered in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), with support from the FIA Foundation, the programme aims to equip local authorities and organisations with the tools, mentorship and expertise needed to implement effective road safety strategies.

The second Asia-Pacific seminar, organised alongside FIA Region II and the Automobile Association Philippines, brought together delegates from 16 FIA Region II Member Clubs and government representatives from 15 countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

The gathering comes at a critical time for the region. Road traffic injuries remain a major public health issue, with South-East Asia and the Western Pacific accounting for more than half of global road traffic fatalities.

Augustus ‘Joe’ Ferreria, FIA Region II President, highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation: “By bringing our Member Clubs together with international partners and policymakers, we are building the regional network of leaders needed to create lasting, tangible change for road users across Asia-Pacific.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us over these two days. You have demonstrated how, through collaboration, innovation and accountability, we can accelerate progress towards safer and more sustainable mobility for everyone.”

The programme combines in-person seminars, online learning, and ongoing mentorship, creating a platform for FIA Member Clubs and government authorities to exchange knowledge and develop practical, locally tailored road safety projects with guidance from international experts.

Sessions focused on how youth engagement, urban development and innovation can advance the Sustainable Development Goals and the Decade of Action for Road Safety, while participants were encouraged to adopt data-driven approaches and strengthen knowledge-sharing across the FIA network.

Alex Mejía, Director of UNITAR’s Division for People and Social Development said: “Achieving sustainable and enduring road safety outcomes requires collaboration and knowledge-sharing across regions.

“With this edition of the FIA Safe Mobility 4 All & 4 Life programme, we hope to empower government leaders and FIA Clubs in Asia-Pacific with the skills and tools required to implement effective road safety strategies for their communities. We are in this together. And we are committed to saving lives.”

Stefano Ammirati, FIA Director for Road Safety and Global Advocacy, added: “We have a collective responsibility to ensure that no road user is left behind as we work towards safer mobility systems worldwide.

“The FIA Safe Mobility 4 All & 4 Life programme supports evidence-based and scalable road safety solutions, translating global priorities into practical actions tailored to regional and national needs.”
