Meera Naran becomes Global NCAP’s first Advocacy Ambassador
Global NCAP is so proud to welcome Meera Naran MBE as its first Advocacy Ambassador.
Meera, a pharmacist and Senior Lecturer at De Montfort University in Leicester, has become one of the most highly respected and recognised road safety advocates in the UK and across the world.
Her journey into road safety was born out of personal tragedy. In 2018, Meera’s eight-year-old son Dev was killed in a motorway collision with a lorry. Meera faced a second loss two years ago when her 16-year old son Neel died from refractory epilepsy, a life-limiting condition.
Since Dev’s death, Meera has become the face, the living proof, of the monumental impact that one person can have on the lives of others.
Her relentless campaigning helped shape the UK’s first Road Safety Strategy in over a decade which was published earlier this year. The national strategy pledges to adopt ‘Dev’s Law’, the campaign named in memory of Meera’s boy which calls for compulsory Autonomous Emergency Braking and other Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) technologies in new vehicles - technology that Meera believes could have saved Dev’s life.
As Advocacy Ambassador of Global NCAP, Meera will extend her life-changing work in championing the organisation to democratise vehicle safety across low and middle-income countries in particular.
Amongst her first posts was in New York, where she gave her first address at the UN High-Level Meeting which brought together world leaders, the public and private sector to accelerate action towards the global goal of halving road deaths and serious injuries by 2030.
“I’m honoured to accept Global NCAP’s invitation to become its first Advocacy Ambassador,” Meera said. “The opportunity to contribute to Global NCAP’s life-saving mission is deeply important to me and I look forward to taking my campaigning to the international stage with great pride and determination.”
With Meera comes a story of how one woman is turning unimaginable grief into unwavering purpose, relentlessly dedicating herself to stopping other families from going through the same loss that she has.
