For 25 years Dr Etienne Krug, Director at the World Health Organization (WHO) has played a major role in the global road safety work of both the WHO and the United Nations (UN). In 2001 he initiated the WHO’s first five year road safety strategy, and supervised in 2004 the publication of the ground-breaking WHO/World Bank World Report on Road Safety, followed by successive Global Road Safety Status Reports, and a series of best practice manuals on key road injury risk factors. Since 2003 he has also chaired the UN Road Safety Collaboration, helped to build partnerships of road safety NGOs & road traffic victim associations, overseen the launch of two successive UN Decades of Action for Road Safety, and four global ministerial conferences. His leadership has helped UN Member States to stabilise and then begin to reduce global road traffic deaths that were forecast to surge in 2004. Etienne’s tireless dedication to road safety advocacy for evidence based & effective road injury prevention policies has been exemplary. For all of the above Global NCAP is profoundly grateful and pleased to acknowledge his outstanding achievements through this special award.
